visual shine, consider the fabric, weave, motifs, zari, borders, weight, fall and finishing. A systematic approach is
especially helpful when comparing several sarees in a Varanasi showroom or textile collection.
Fabric first
Begin by identifying the fabric and desired feel. Ask whether it is silk, a blend or another textile and request the exact
product specification.
Understand the weave
Ask whether the piece is handloom or powerloom when that distinction matters. Do not assume from appearance
alone.
Look at motifs and borders
Motif scale, border width and placement affect how a saree looks when worn. Compare the design with the intended
